Atlanta Hawks Poetry Slam Contest
Calling all high school students! The Atlanta Hawks Poetry Slam is a shout-out especially to you, an invite to turn your thoughts into verse and speak them aloud. Submit your written entry for the Atlanta Hawks Poetry Slam contest by Nov. 28th and vie for a chance to spit your verse during a special Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration at the Hawks game on Monday, January 19th. Student Achiever
Motivating youth to earn good grades, stay in school and work hard is what the Atlanta Hawks Student Achiever program is all about. Sponsored by Philips, this effort recognizes middle and high school students who earn a 3.0, improve their grades, have perfect attendance and work hard.

The Atlanta Hawks Student Achiever program is at capacity for the 2008-2009 season. Please check back at the beginning of next school year to enroll your school.

Fast Break for Reading

In conjunction with the NBA and its national campaign to help young people develop a life-long love for reading, the Atlanta Hawks are again offering the Fast Break for Reading program to greater-Atlanta area elementary schools. Sponsored by Philips and Sprite, the program uses the excitement of professional basketball to encourage a life-long love of reading. For each 25 books student read, they earn such rewards as Hawks bookmarks, stickers and pencils.

    Atlanta Hawks And Thrashers School Assembly Program

    The Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers joined forces to create an exciting assembly program that focuses on the importance of reading, healthy eating habits and staying active! Targeting elementary schools in the Metro Atlanta area, the 45-minute program features Hawks and Thrashers staff, dance team members and mascots. This high-energy program uses fun examples and exciting visual aids to teach students these important concepts. For participating in the program, schools will receive 50 books for their media center and other great incentives.

    Read to Achieve (RTA) is a year-round program developed by the NBA and NBA Players Association to help young people develop a life-long love for reading. Reaching millions of children worldwide, RTA is supported by all 30 NBA teams, 16 WNBA teams, and 8 NBDL teams. More >>

    As part of the team’s Read to Achieve Program, the Atlanta Hawks are asking fans to bring new or gently used children’s books with them to Philips Arena this season. The books will be donated to Hawks reading and learning centers in metro Atlanta along with Communities In Schools. For your convenience, the Read to Achieve Book Bin will be located outside the Team Gear Store on the main concourse near portal 9 every game this season for book collections. Give the gift of reading! Support the Hawks Read to Achieve program, sponsored by Philips and Sprite.


    Honor Roll Program
    The Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers Honor Roll program rewards students of all ages for their academic achievement. Any student at a participating school who is excelling in the classroom will earn a complimentary Hawks or Thrashers ticket with the purchase of a discounted ticket this season. Participating schools will also be eligible to register for a chance to receive a scholarship for their school.     Atlanta Hawks Announce Scholarship Program

    The Atlanta Hawks and Project GRAD Atlanta are launching a new scholarship program for Georgia high school seniors attending a Project GRAD high school. The initiative will give students the opportunity to earn $2,000 towards a college education.

    To apply, students must complete an application form along with a typed 1,000-word essay, and submit both items to their school’s Scholarship Coordinator, by February 28, 2007. Other requirements include a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor, and proof of Georgia residency.

    Additionally, applicants must be a senior at one of the Project GRAD high schools (Booker T. Washington High School, South Atlanta High School or the New Schools at Carver) with a minimum 2.8 cumulative grade point average. Interested students pursuing an educational or professional career in Education, Physical Education, Sports Management, Marketing or Communications are eligible to apply.
