BRANDON RUSH
6-6, 210, SG-SF, Kansas
Prospect Profile | Video highlights
Q. Is this what you thought you were going to get considering you already have some familiarity with the organization?
A. This is what I expected as far as the workout.
Q. Do you ever think about being on the same team as your brother?
A. I never thought about until I came to this workout. It could happen, but I doubt it. I seriously doubt it, because we play the same position. We’d be battling everyday. It would be pretty funny though.
Q. Who would win those battles?
A. I get the best of him now. I think I’m the better player than him now.
Q. He’s not in town by any chance is he?
A. He was in the locker room.
Q. Oh, was he?
A. Yeah, yeah he got back yesterday the same time I got back or the same I got in, so I haven’t had a chance to spend time with him yet. But I’m going to chat it up with him as soon as I get done here.
Q. What kind of things do you try to show to teams as you go around to these workouts?
A. That I can put the ball on the floor. Most people expect me to be a spot-up shooter, to stand there and shoot the ball, so in the workout I try to prove I can put the ball on the floor.
Q. What’s your schedule been like?
A. This last week I went to Orlando, Toronto, and (New) Jersey in three days so I had a two-day break. Today, Indiana, tomorrow I go to Cleveland, then I get a three-day break, but next week is jam-packed. I will do five workouts next week.
Q. Do you find yourself competing against the same guys at all at any of these workouts?
A. One person I see almost everywhere is CDR. (Chris Douglas-Roberts) from Memphis. I see him at every single workout, so I expect to see him some more.
Q. What are your thoughts on George Hill, were you familiar with him before?
A. My best friend played against him in college, said he was a great player, and today he proved it a little bit showing what he can do.
Q. Brandon how much more are you prepared for this, this time around than you would have been coming out high school?
A. I think I am very, very (prepared). I spent time in Chicago with Tim Grover and worked out going through the same thing I’m going through right now, so I was pretty much prepared for this.
Q. As you look back how grateful are you to have that college experience, the opportunity to win a national championship. Or do you think well I could have been in the pros all this time?
A. I thought that, but going back to school and learning, learning the game, experience the whole college atmosphere, and going to Kansas which is a beautiful school, it was a great experience for me. Taught me a lot.
Q. What kind of scouting report did Kareem give you on this place?
A. He didn’t really tell me anything. He just said that the workouts were pretty hard and they showed me that today.
Pre-draft transcript: June 25, 2008
Q: Why do you think it took a little while for teams to realize you belong in the green room?
Rush: I guess because of the type of team we had at Kansas. We were pretty well balanced. We didn’t have a star player. It was a different player stepping up every night. It’s kind of hard to really appreciate an individual’s skill set. But once you get into an individual workout, you have a chance to shine.
Q: Why are teams viewing you as being “NBA ready?”
Rush: I’ve spent three years in college. I’ve developed my body. I’ve gotten stronger. I play the type of game they play in the NBA, pick and roll, up-tempo.
Q: What are your strengths as a player?
Rush: I think shooting and playing defense, and doing a lot of the little things. I think I probably need to get stronger and keep my body in shape. The NBA season is a long journey, and you have to really be at your best physically.
Q: How much of an eye opener was the 2005 Pre-Draft Camp, which you attended right out of high school?
Rush: It was a big eye opener. It was telling me that I really wasn’t ready for that type of play, and it would be really beneficial for me to go to college.
Q: What are you bringing to a team in that mid-first round?
Rush: The ability to defend, shoot the three.
Q: What did you learn from your brother [Kareem Rush]?
Rush: Just to work hard every day. That’s the one thing he lacked early on in his NBA career. Every time I step on the court, I’m going to give it all that I have.
Q: Some teams are saying you might be the safest pick in the draft. What do you think of that?
Rush: I’m not sure why they’re saying that, but I think I can definitely bring some stuff to the table that teams need, being able to defend and shoot the ball.
