Scholarship winners will be selected based on a written essay or short story on what sportsmanship means to them. Essays will be judged on originality, writing style, grammar, content, and overall message. Essays may be no longer than 2,000 words. Any student in grades kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to apply. Students must reside in the state of Michigan.
In order to be considered for the first scholarship, entries must be received no later than October 1, 2008 by 5:00 p.m. Eastern time. Non-winning entries will still be eligible to be considered for the second scholarship. All entries must be received by April 1, 2009 by 11:59 p.m. No late entries will be accepted. The winner will be contacted by phone or email no later than April 3rd, 2008. Note: The online entry form will be unavailable from Sept. 30 through Oct. 7, 2008.
Students must be at least 13 years old to submit their entry online. Students under the age of 13 must submit their entry by mail.
The scholarship awarded will be invested by Detroit Free Press Gift of Reading on behalf of the scholarship University, College or Vocational School of the Winner's choice. Winner, or Winner's guardian if Winner is under the age of 18, must fill out additional paperwork with Detroit Free Press Gift of Reading and provide a school name, class schedule and student identification number when available.
